One of the best things about living at Hereford is the variety of indoor and outdoor spaces for social activities, programs, studying, and relaxation. With the stunning location on Observatory Hill, Hereford is uniquely situated for easy access to Central Grounds, but at the same time provides a quiet retreat with the greenest environment at UVa complete with hiking trails, a Lawn, and private hammocks. Whatever your interests, Hereford has the space for you.
Whyburn and Norris
Designed by architects, Todd Williams/Billie Tsien, the buildings of Hereford offer a modern alternative to other architecture around Grounds. The two dormitories that make up Hereford Residential College are Whyburn and Norris, both of which offer single and double rooms for hall-style living. Each floor has a lounge, offering privacy as well as a community lifestyle. There is one kitchen in each building complete with a stove, oven, microwave, and refrigerator for cooking needs. For more specifics on room dimensions visit the UVa Housing website.
The heart of the Hereford community space is the Hereford Hub where many of the regular programs, courses, and other activities take place such as weekly breakfast club, Campus Cookies, short courses, and Student Senate Meetings. The Hub is equipped with a comfortable TV lounge space, a private group study space/classroom, and our quiet library study space. There is 24/7 access to coffee, tea, and hot chocolate as well as frequent snacks for those late nights of studying. The Hereford office manager, Terry Hughes, is also based in the Hub and she is available 9am-5pm M-F to answer questions or provide access to Hereford resources.
The Hereford Principal lives in Vaughan House, the upper floor of the Hereford Hub. This space acts as a home-away-from-home for Hereford students with events such as the monthly Vaughan Dinners with special guests, study breaks, and other food events.
One of Hereford's greatest assets is the Hereford Lawn, the open green space uniting Vaughan House, Whyburn, and Norris. The Lawn is used during warm months for Saturday sports afternoons as well as afternoons of frisbee, soccer, and sunbathing. The space is also used to host community-wide banquets and the annual Movie on the Hill. In the cold and snowy winter months, students can be found sledding down the Hill! Near the Lawn are located BBQ grills, picnic tables, and Hereford hammocks for afternoons of relaxation.
Outside of the Hub is the Hereford amphitheater (not to be confused with the UVa amphitheater) used for community-wide events such as the annual Convocation, outdoor karaoke, and s'mores nights with the fire pit. It is also a great place for studying in the sun.
One of our most important spaces is our very own college garden. The space is tended by the Hereford community throughout the schoolyear and summer and is a great place to when you want a break from studying. The garden has vegetables, flowers, and herbs.
