My name is Velan Shanmuganathan and I am a third-year from Woodbridge, Virginia. Currently, I plan on double majoring in Public Policy and Leadership and Media Studies. My areas of interest include police-community relations, social media regulation and criminal justice reform. Last year, I held the position of Civic Engagement Programmer within the Hereford Student Senate and was responsible for organizing and leading bi-monthly discussions promoting student involvement in a wide array of political issues. Upon graduation from the Frank Batten School, I hope to work in public relations for a criminal justice think tank. This summer, I helped to design scenario-based training for Charlottesville police officers and worked to develop social media posts for a medical non-profit.
